If you were to ask the average person on the street what their idea of a “marijuana user” looked and acted like, you would probably get some of the stereotypical answers one would expect. Red eyes, coughs a lot, goofy, lazy, sleepy, hungry, thirsty, and useless would more than likely be some of the descriptions used to paint a picture of how cannabis affects the body. (Almost sounds like a bad Snow White and the Seven Dwarves remake, doesn’t it?) But the truth is that there are people at this very moment daring to challenge common misperceptions about cannabis use, and they’re definitely sweating it out.
‘Yoga’-na have a blast at 420 Games
Shattering the negative stigma is first up on the agenda for the organizers and participants of the 420 Games, held this year in San Francisco, Denver, Boulder, and Portland (Oregon). The games give cannabis users a place where they can get up and get out and about with other like-minded individuals.
The event is CANNABIS-FREE (not the other way around, unfortunately!), which eliminates any potential legal troubles. However, they do encourage safe consumption prior to attending, if desired, in order to elevate one’s engagement and performance. The scheduled program consists of a check-in/meet and greet, yoga stretch, 4.20K fun run, and vendor booth visit. Bikes, pets, and children are welcome, as this is a family sporting event and not a “smoke-out”.
Drunk, lazy, or stupid need not apply
Jim McAlpine, one of the founding members of last year’s events, told CBS News:
People who use marijuana have been classified as dumb, lazy, stupid people, and with this race we’re showing them we’re not what they say we are. We want to show them we are motivated, athletic members of society.
This attitude and sentiment is shared by the hundreds of attendees and volunteers who show up to make abundantly clear their stance on cannabis.
Just as no two people on the face of the earth are exactly the same, so it is with different strains of cannabis. Some are grown or engineered to reduce high levels of pain and inflammation; others are geared for tackling epilepsy; some relieve stress and anxiety; while others are very uplifting and provide the consumer with boundless creative energy. Check out these stimulating, creative, and energetic strains that are the perfect companion to an active lifestyle.
The more that people learn about the potential of cannabis to enhance overall health, the sooner the negative image of what a cannabis user looks like will fade away. In order for that to happen, people need to lead by example and show the world the truest and most unapologetic version of themselves possible.
There is definitely change on the horizon. And the 420 Games are running right toward it!
